(Before 1980) A large azalea thought to be a cross between prunifolium and arborescens. It has light yellow – peach colored flowers in mid August. Prunifolium gorws in the wild in only a few counties on the Georgia/Alabama border. Our plant is located in the area just north of the Kellam Area. It is some 20 feet off the trail, west of R. ‘SW 12500-11’ on the Kellam Spur Trail.

Rhododendron catawbiense #1
(1992) This species is common in the mountains of NC, but does not do very well in the Charlotte climate. Our plant is struggling, with the entire plant cut back to some fresh growth at the base (as of 2017). This plant is located on the trail near the point where the trail takes a sharp bend to the northeast towards the Short Branch Spur.

(Before 1980) A very old, large plant at the north end of the Kellam Spur Trail. It is located next to Dexter’s Spring Glory, in the area adjoining (north) of the Kellam area.

(1991) A Dexter hybrid from the Kellam collection, with light pink flowers. Our plant is growing more laterally than upright due to lack of good light. It is located just off the trail, near its bend at the Hickory Bridge.

(Unknown date) An older hybrid of catawbiense by the English hybridizer, Anthony Waterer. It has rosy-lavender flowers with a yellow blotch. Located off the trail, near a large hemlock in the Kellam Area, in the section that intersects with the Short Branch Spur Trail. Likely planted in the 1980’s.

(Unknown date) An older plant in the PJM Group, hybridized by Mezitt , crossing R. carolinianum and R.dauricum. Small leaves and no taller than about six feet. Located on the section of the Kellam Spur Trail that intersects with the Short Branch Spur Trail.

(1991) A Dexter hybrid from the Kellam collection, with the fortunei species as a parent. It has deep pink flowers with a crimson throat and large deep green leaves. It is located in the northern section of the Kellam Area, off the trail, not far from the trail bend where the spur returns to the Kellam Trail. It is close to a large red oak tree.

(Before 1980) A hybrid with one parent being ‘Purple Splendour’, giving the flowers a purplish-red color. The plant is quite common in the Glen and distinguished by the unusual shape of the flower buds. This plant is located on the trail, close to (west of) R. ‘HP 648-67’, in the area just north of the Kellam Area.

(Unknown date) A large spreading plant located some 20 feet off the trail, filling a large area on the sidehill near the beginning of the Kellam Spur Trail. ‘Cynthia’ is probably the best “doer” in the Glen due to its sun and heat resistance. It seems virtually indestructible.

(1991) A hybrid from the Kellam Collection. It is located on the trail in the Kellam area, just west of ‘True Treasure’ and not far from the intersection with the Short Branch Trail.
